History

Located at the brink of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls, the Table Rock Centre (now home to the Table Rock House Restaurant) stands tall as a landmark that has witnessed the evolution of Niagara Falls. However, not many are aware of its humble beginnings as a museum. The Table Rock Centre, which was initially constructed to showcase the geological and natural history of the region, was transformed into the iconic Table Rock House in 1853. The title was inspired by the majestic slab of rock that protruded from the gorge wall and offered a breathtaking vantage point of the falls. However, the table rock’s decline began in 1818 and continued to crumble through the 19th century.

In 1885, the Queen Victoria Niagara Falls Park Act marked a turning point for the Table Rock House. The act enabled the government to acquire private properties, including the Table Rock House, to restore the land to its natural state. However, the location’s strategic positioning and good condition meant it was spared demolition. Instead, the government refurbished the building to serve as a visitor center, officially opening to the public on May 24th, 1888. As a result, Table Rock House became the heart of Niagara tourism, welcoming visitors from around the globe.

In 1925, the falls’ continuous southward recession necessitated the construction of a new observation complex to offer unobstructed views. After an open contest, Findlay and Foulis emerged as the winners, and construction began later that year. The new complex, located south of the original building, was more extensive and boasted new amenities such as dressing rooms and catering. It was a modern marvel, designed to cater to the influx of tourists seeking a glimpse of Niagara’s natural wonder. Over the next century, the complex underwent several renovations, including the addition of Table Rock South in 1974, housing the famous Table Rock House Restaurant. Today, the restaurant remains an essential part of Niagara’s history, providing patrons with unparalleled views of the falls while dining on gourmet cuisine.
